Workshop on professional Development for Young Researchers
Being aware that only one in four post-doctoral students get a position as Principal Investigator, the ‘Professional Development Workshop for Young Researchers’ aims to provide strong arguments to encourage the idea that doctoral training not only serves to develop a complete academic career, but also to acquire a variety of knowledge, behaviours and attributes key to a successful career within or outside the world of science. These non-classical scientific routes offer a different career and projection that many young doctors can achieve and perform satisfactorily.
The objectives of the Workshop are:
- To emphasize the value of the development of transferable skills during and after the PhD as a tool to access to non-academic careers.
- To show the different professional opportunities for which the PhD title in Sciences offers an adequate training.
- To serve as a meeting and information point between young researchers and different experts in other positions within and outside the academic career.
- To open a discussion forum among young researchers about other job opportunities that may awaken their vocation and how to access.
Programme:
The workshop is designed in two parts:
Short talks: Experts from different fields outside the academic pathway will exhibit alternative routes related with Science and will discuss with the participants their personal interest, motivation and difficulties of their transition from an academic position to a different professional career.
Practical workshops: Three eligible participative workshops of 2 hours will cover and develop strategies for a professional transition to a non-academic career, opportunities abroad within and outside academia or steps and challenges to develop translational science and become a scientist entrepreneur.
- Date: Tuesday, 16 July 2019. 09:00 – 16:45
- Venue of the workshop: Bahía-La Paz-Caracas Rooms
- Coordinators: Sergio P. Acebrón, Sara Alvira de Celis & Eduardo Oliver
